I began teaching hokku many years ago when I discovered that people had not only forgotten what it was and how to write it, but they had even forgotten what it was called.
Hokku has as its subject Nature and the place of humans within and as a part of, not apart from, Nature. It combines that with a deep, non-dogmatic spirituality. And in our rootless and difficult times, this could not possibly be more relevant.
If you find that hokku and related spirituality speak to your condition, I invite you to join me here as we explore the verse form in the endlessly-changing context of the seasons.
It is important to note that I teach hokku, not haiku. I have nothing to do with the modern haiku community, its aesthetics and its goals. Since its origins in the mid-20th century it has done almost irreparable and ongoing damage to the hokku tradition, which I have long been working to restore.
